STAMP DAY 2026High above Kleinbettingen
In 2026, the Cercle Philatélique de la Vallée de l’Eisch, based in Kleinbettingen, a village in the municipality of Steinfort in the far west of the Grand Duchy, will host Stamp Day. The association is celebrating its 70th anniversary, and philatelists can look forward to exciting discussions. However, the event won’t just be for seasoned collectors: the organisers also promise exciting discoveries for anyone who has not yet taken up collecting, and warmly invite them to explore the fascinating world of stamps.
As is customary, POST Philately will be issuing a special stamp featuring a design chosen by the host club. This year’s design depicts the water tower on the Bechel. It was built in 1953 to replace an underground water reservoir dating from 1912 that had stood on the same site. The water tower has a capacity of 265 m³ and supplied the entire municipality of Steinfort up until the 1990s, when increased demand necessitated the construction of a new and larger water tower.
The name on the Bechel (the word Bechel refers, among other things, to a small hill) is no coincidence: the tower is situated on a light elevation and, at a height of 24 meters, is clearly visible from the surrounding area. Walkers who stop for a break at its base can enjoy a good view of both Belgium (around 2 kilometers away) and the skyscrapers of the Kirchberg plateau in Luxembourg City (around 18 kilometers away).
The water tower in Kleinbettingen is one of the oldest structures of its kind, with something of a classic design. There are numerous water towers in Luxembourg, with new ones being built all the time. As well as serving a technical purpose, they also stand as architectural monuments to the particular era in which they were built.
