Face of a new era
A change in head of state often marks the beginning of a new definitive series, as portraits of monarchs are traditionally used as motifs for this kind of stamp.
In line with this common practice, POST Philately is issuing new Luxembourg definitive stamps featuring the portrait of HRH the Grand Duke following the change of throne that took place in October 2025. Definitive stamps – also known as definitive series – are usually available for many years and cover all the important postage rates required for domestic and international letters in addition to special methods of dispatch.
Definitive stamp designs are deliberately kept simple. They are characterised by a clear style, a uniform appearance within a series, and a compact format. Each face value is often assigned its own colour, which makes identification easier and is conducive to machine finishing. While heads of state are a classic choice when it comes to stamp design, many countries resort to more timeless depictions such as national emblems, plants, animals, architectural landmarks or abstract patterns – motifs that can stand the test of time and do not become quickly outdated.
Unlike special stamps, which are usually only available for a short period of time and are linked to events, anniversaries or special occasions, the purpose of definitive stamps is primarily a functional one. They are produced in large quantities and are a regular sight in everyday postal traffic.
But that doesn’t mean they’re not exciting for collectors. Variations in printing methods, colours, paper types or cancellation marks can make them even more interesting – and sometimes even valuable – in spite of their widespread usage.
