NEW BUILDING OF THE LUXEMBOURG NATIONAL ARCHIVES IN ESCH-BELVAL
Ready for the future
The Luxembourg National Archives are responsible for collecting, preserving, cataloguing and making available documents of historical, scientific, economic, societal and cultural interest. They also advise public and private institutions on archiving and play a key role in the preservation of Luxembourg’s cultural heritage.
The institution’s new building in Esch-Belval offers a functional and efficient infrastructure designed to meet both current and future requirements. The multi-storey structure has a storage capacity of 105 kilometers of shelving (the archive’s current collections cover around 50 kilometers of shelving) as well as modern working space and logistics facilities.
Modern building systems, including precise climate control and a heat pump system, ensure constant temperatures and humidity levels to help safeguard the collection, some of which is sensitive and requires particular care. The sustainable building also boasts an innovative energy concept: the facades and roof are clad in photovoltaic panels to generate the energy the building needs on-site. The new building’s public area for research and exhibits is designed to be an accessible cultural and meeting space.
With this ambition in mind, the decision to locate the archives in Esch-Belval is no coincidence. Its close proximity to the University of Luxembourg and, by extension, the university’s research centers fosters direct academic synergies. With a direct link to the public transport network – Esch-Belval station is practically on its doorstep – the National Archives are easily accessible to researchers, students, school groups and members of the public, both from Luxembourg and further afield.
