True treasures

EUROPA stamps are among the most sought after by collectors in the world. Luxembourg is a founding member of PostEurop, the association that, among other things, determines the common theme for each year, so it goes without saying that POST Philately issues designs in line with each new theme.

The 2025 stamp series is dedicated to national archaeological discoveries.

POST Philately was able to draw on the support of the Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques (INRA) to help select the two designs for the Luxembourg stamps. The number of archaeological sites and finds in Luxembourg is greater than one might think – so the professional advice provided by INRA’s experts helped greatly when it came to making this decision.

The Gallo-Roman theatre in Dalheim/Ricciacum

The Gallo-Roman villa in Schieren

Discovered by chance in 1985, the theatre is one of the most important Roman sites in Luxembourg, both from an archaeological and a tourism perspective, thanks to its good state of preservation.

Built at the beginning of the 2nd century, the theatre was able to seat up to 3,000 people and served as the cultural, religious and administrative centre of an entire region for over two centuries.
With 13 known outbuildings, a thermal bath complex with heated pools, and a typical main building, the Gallo-Roman villa in Schieren covers an area of over seven hectares.

The main building had an open colonnade, and its interior was decorated with colourful murals featuring mythological, figurative and geometric designs. The remains of a multicoloured mosaic floor were also found.
