The “Commissariat aux affaires maritimes” was established in November 1990 with the aim of creating a public maritime register for Luxembourg. This body acts as a service provider while also being the supervising authority for the shipping industry and particularly for the approved shipping companies operating from Luxembourg. In 2000, the “Commissariat aux affaires maritimes” adopted a quality management system allowing it to become the first public body in Luxembourg to be ISO 9001 certified. Since 1990, the shipping industry is an important part of the government’s economic diversification policy. As of the end of 2015, the Luxembourg Maritime Register had some 224 vessels, with a total gross tonnage of almost 3 million tonnes.
