Description

This stamp pays tribute to the shoemaker, the craftsmen who worked and shaped leather before shoe factories came into being.

Traditionally the shoemaker only needed two pairs of shoes. The first were for working and daily life, the second were only worn for important occasions and to go to church.

In the 20th century there was a pretty much a shoemaker in almost every village. In 1907, Luxembourg had 1,015 workshops employing 1,267 shoemakers. With the arrival of shoe factories, the work of a shoemaker was reduced to repairing shoes
