Description

The City of Luxembourg has been able to preserve remnants of its impressive fortifications and the Old Quarters in an exceptional natural environment. It easily won the right to be included on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.

Luxembourg, a city full of history

In the 10th century, Count Siegfried built a small fort on a rock which was virtually inaccessible. In the 12th century, the settlement was further protected  by a surrounding wall.

conquest made by King Louis XIV, Vauban extended and reinforced the fortifications. During the 18th century, the Austrians continued his work and created the "Gibraltar of the North".

After the Congress of Vienna, the Prussians created new military structures until the dismantling was decided in 1867. The fortifications are now protected , and they are a historical ensemble of prime importance.

The artist

Ben Carter was born in England in 1977. At the age of 9, he moved with his family to Luxembourg. After his studies at Kingston University, where he obtained a BA in Illustration in 2000, followed by a Masters in Illustration & Design at Central St. Martins, London in 2003, he returned to Luxembourg.

"It was a great honour for me, to design a stamp for Luxembourg depicting the UNESCO world heritage site. It was the icing on the cake for my career as an artist in Luxembourg.

I had a specific idea about what I wanted the dimensions of each stamp to be and POST Philately kindly followed my wishes. The stamps perfectly combine old and new.

You can find the initials of my daughter Julia Jagoda Carter, on the face of one of the buildings. I look forward to the future when my daughter can understand that her initials are on the stamp as a reminder that in the week she was born I was given the honour to create my first ever stamp. "
