In 2017, the postal service in Luxembourg will celebrate the 175th anniversary of its foundation following a decree of King-Grand Duke William II on 20 August 1842. The role of the postal service was initially to transport letters and messages on horseback or by other means of transport. The first telephone lines appeared in 1880 following the establishment of the telegraph office in 1861. From 1898 onwards, it was possible to make telephone calls abroad from Luxembourg (initially to Belgium). This laid the foundation for the telecommunications services. .
POST Luxembourg is the leading provider in the field of postal and telecommunications services in Luxembourg. The postal service has also been offering financial services since 1911.
