STATEC is known as the national statistical authority via publication of the monthly consumer price index and for setting the GDP (gross domestic product).
STATEC was formed as a result of a merger of the Office of General Statistics and the Office of Economic Studies and Documentation in 1962. STATEC became the National institute of statistics and economic studies in 2011.
It represents Luxembourg within the European statistical system and coordinates Luxembourg's statistical system. STATEC's goal is to establish a coherent statistical information system, while reducing the administrative load of collecting statistics.
STATEC is a department of the Ministry of the Economy and Commerce. However, it maintains scientific and professional independence for its work.
Its programme is set up in accordance with European and national statistical legislation, while adapting to the needs of its users. Its goals, expanded over the course of time, consist of providing q high-quality public statistics and information service. This information is aimed at public and private decision-makers as well as citizens.
The institute is committed to producing and publishing statistics and analysis, and detailed, reliable, and objective scientific studies and research about Luxembourg's society.
