Description

This stamp set features Nicolas Adames, the first person from Luxembourg to be ordained as a priest in 1839.

Nicolas Adames was 26 when he was ordained as a priest. He was the first bishop of Luxembourg between 1870 and 1883.

His official ordination in the cathedral on 25th December 1870 marked the high point of a long and fruitful career in the clergy.

At age 50, Nicolas Adames became titular bishop of Halicarnassus and apostolic vicar of Luxembourg. He also took part in the first Vatican Synod in Rome in 1869.

Nicolas Adames was made Bishop in June 1870. The Apostolic Vicariate of Luxembourg was elevated in June of the same year.

The star of this set of stamps is Putty Stein, considered by many to be the founder of Luxembourg "Chanson".

Putty Stein is a well-known Luxembourgish author-composer-cabaret artist. He founded the La Mansarde cabaret, together with other artists, in 1915.

He is known as the father of Luxembourg "chanson". His most well-known songs: "De schéine Poli", "Neen, déi Schnëss! ", "D'Quiselchen", and "Dem Wirsch seng Wueden" - cast a critical eye on society.

Putty Stein was born in Colmar-Berg. His started his working life as a forest ranger for ARBED.

Interview with Anne Mélan

Was it hard to design two stamps at almost the same time?
The challenge in creating stamps is to do justice to the people involved. First of all, each hand-painted portrait has to resemble the individuals as closely as possible, while giving them a lively appearance.

Secondly, it was important to find an underlying representative unity for both individuals.

Did you encounter any specific difficulties when drawing these historical figures?
The fact that I was dealing with historical figures worked precisely to my advantage. The commonality between these two people came from different areas. The difficulty was in depicting this appropriately. My main concern was to interpret both characters with a retro feel.

Looking back, what have you learned from this work?
I realised how important it is to honour people from our past, so that they and their legacy don't vanish into oblivion.
